Augmentative Communication Devices and ALS

One of the most widely known uses of augmentative communication devices is by persons with Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or “ALS.” Individuals with this progressive nervous system disease experience increasing difficulty with speech and many ultimately lose their ability to speak. For these individuals, augmentative communication devices can become invaluable lifelines that improve communication and enhance quality of life. They do the same for other non-speaking persons with different conditions.
